To a lonely generation, a book can say: “you are not alone”

Publié le 01/06/2026

Six in ten young adults say they are seriously lonely. A book read in silence becomes a presence. And you know the words that lift.

The numbers are staggering. Nearly six in ten young adults report being seriously lonely. The World Health Organization has ranked loneliness among the “most significant global health threats.” No generation has ever been so connected — and so isolated.

Behind every screen glowing late at night, there's a question no one dares ask out loud: “does anyone really understand what I'm going through?”

Comfort, comfort my people, says your God. Speak tenderly to Jerusalem. — Isaiah 40:1-2

A book isn't an object. It's a presence.

Ask anyone to name a book that helped them through a dark season. They'll remember instantly — often years later. Why? Because a book read alone, in silence, becomes a companion. The author sits beside the reader and says, page after page: “I've been there too, and here's what I found.”

You have walked with broken people. You know the words that lift. What you say in one pastoral conversation, a book can say to thousands — including those who will never dare walk through a church door or ask for help.

Your next page — Think of someone you helped out of loneliness or despair. What did you understand alongside them? What you would have written them in a letter may be the heart of your future book.
